Topic: The hydrogeology of bromate movement in the Hertfordshire Chalk aquifer
Grant Body: EPSRC
Sponsors: Thames Water Utilities Ltd, Veolia Water Partnership
Supervisor(s): Dr. Willy Burgess & Prof. John Barker (Southampton)

Ciara Fitzpatrick
Topic: Hydrogeology of bromate movement in the Hertfordshire Chalk aquifer: Source mechanisms and hydrological controls
Grant Body: EPSRC
Sponsors: Thames Water Utilities Ltd, Veolia Water Partnership
Supervisor(s): Dr. Willy Burgess & Prof. John Barker (Southampton)

Ciara started her EngD in November 2005. Her research focuses on the distribution and behaviour of bromate within the Hertfordshire Chalk and aims to develop approaches for the prediction of long-term, large-scale transport of bromate in the aquifer. Ciara has BA in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University (awarded 2002) and an MSc in Environmental Diagnosis from Imperial College London (awarded 2005). She has worked as a contaminated land and groundwater consultant for the Environment Agency and Whitbybird.

Mohammad Hoque Mohammad Hoque
Topic: Models for managing the deep aquifers in Bangladesh
Grant Body: Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, UK
Supervisor(s): Dr. Willy Burgess & Prof. John Barker (Southampton)

Moham started his PhD at UCL in September 2006. He completed his BSc (1999) and MSc (2001) in Geology at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Subsequently he completed a postgraduate Diploma in Water Resources Development (2004) from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET). Moham worked for several years as a research associate at the University of Dhaka on groundwater arsenic issues in Bangladesh. Holding a faculty position at Shahjalal University of Science & Technology, Bangladesh (since December 2004), he is currently undertaking research on the sustainability of the deep aquifer in Bangladesh.

Bethan James
Topic: The mineralogical and hydrogeological controls on fluoride in water
Grant Body: EPSRC & NHM
Supervisor(s): Dr. Willy Burgess, Prof. Tim Atkinson, & Dr. Eva Valsami-Jones (NHM)

Max Karen (part-time)
Topic: Hydrogeology (Botswana)
Grant Body: Self-funded
Supervisor(s): Dr. W.G. Burgess and Dr J. Morley

Simon Quinn Simon Quinn
Topic: Contaminant attentuation in chalk groundwater: a new approach using radio-chemistry.
Grant Body: NERC LOCAR

Simon started his PhD at UCL in May 2004. He completed an MA in Geological Sciences at Cambridge (1998) and then an MSc in Hydrogeology and Groundwater Resources at UCL (2000). He worked for several years within environmental consultancy where he specialized in numerical groundwater resource modelling. Now Simon is undertaking research into the distribution and movement of radon gas and its progenies in chalk groundwaters.
